Synopsis

Sviraj (pronounced SVEE-rye) is one of the few authentic tamburitza outfits active in the U.S. The style hails from Eastern European nations like Croatia, Macedonia, and Romania, and is heavily influenced by local Roma (Gypsy) populations. The lineup typically calls for nimble-fingered string players (in this case including fiddle, cello, guitar, and indigenous plucked instruments such as the prim and brac) and close-harmony vocals. Although a tad talky onstage, Sviraj are blessedly free of pedantic attitudes. Their technical aplomb is tempered by passion, soulfulness, and folksy humor. They are clearly having a blast playing to a hometown crowd at the University of Pennsylvania on this double-CD album, which preserves two sets performed on a single night, plus the participation of Zvonko Bogdan, a septuagenarian singer who flew in from Serbia especially for the occasion. Disc two is enhanced with live videos of three songs, song translations, and other features. --Christina Roden

Hot Serbo-Croatian Band in a Great Live Performance
Erika Borsos | Gulf Coast of FL, USA | 05/25/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Balkan music is my favorite, having heard of "Sviraj", an American Serbo-Croatian band, I wanted to own their music. I selected this 2 CD set, basically, so I could have even *more* great music. I was not disappointed. These guys are passionate! I love the violin improvisations and embellishmetns by Raczar Lopatic. Danilo Yanich and Lenny Tepsich add the right inflections on the bugarija and bass. This CD is special because there are three guests players which enhance the music: Vlad Popovich, a famous Tambouritza player from Canada, Jerry Grecevich a premier tambura player whose talents are recognized in Europe and the USA, and Zvonko Bogdan, a Yugoslavian singing legend from Vojdovina.

"Sviraj" are innovators NOT imitators. They have a swinging, up-beat style that is uniquely their own, yet the tambouritza style, the staccato rhythm and beat is unmistakable. They play great music. The fact is, there is an underlying American accent noted in their singing, but for me, that is not a problem, it is who they are. It does not detract from the great music.

CD 1 contains melodies and rhythms that are more sedate than CD 2, but nonetheless, very memorable songs and melodies. Two favorites are "Miserlou" and "Jovano Jovanke", very danceable tunes. They remind me of growing up. Nostalgia returns for the summer picnics at my friend's Serbian Orthodox church ... the days when the dancing and music seemed to go on forever. Well, sadly, it ended and *now* the best I can do is find a CD like this, to remind me of "the good old days" ... The gypsy songs and kolos are superb. My measure for great music: does it make me jump up and dance? I can honestly say, YES! I was brought to my feet *five* times by this music. Therefore, this 2 CD set meets my highest standards for high quality music.

CD 2 is more passionate and enthusiastic but then it has the phenomenal playing of the guest performers, Vlad Popovich, and the prim and brac by Jerry Grcevich, plus the authentic vocals by Zvonko Bogdan. I got goose bumps listening to him sing, first an Hungarian-styled gypsy song, in Serbian, followed by the authentic Hungarian lyrics. The CD ends with a grand finale, a famous Romanian styled violin show-piece called, "The Lark", followed by the "southern Slav" "Orange Blossom Special". Highly recommended CDs for enthusiasts of Balkan Music. Erika Borsos (erikab93)"
Just like you were there.....

"I've watched these guys perform all over the country the last few years, and listening to this CD is just like being right there with them. The same energy and enthusiasm, and love for the music can be felt in every song. For anyone that enjoys live tambura music, this is the real deal. And the supporting cast they've put together is AWESOME. Definitely a keeper!"
