"Svetlana is an opera singer by trade, but she very successfully crosses-over to do Russian songs on this CD. She doesn't sound like an opera singer trying to do another style, she is Russian enough (even though her family is now living in France) to use Russian vocal stylings, so the CD sounds really wonderful. The folk songs sound like folk songs, and the Romances (art songs) sound parlor-sung. There are also some hauntingly beautiful songs (and a vocalise) from other parts of the former Soviet Union as well. She also sings in duet (or trio) with herself on songs that call for multiple voices, which obviously makes the blend perfect. She also duets with a male family member (brother? father?) on at least one song, so you can hear the male folk-singing style. The Russian chestnuts are here:
Alone on the Road
In the Silence of the Night
The Wild Cherry Tree...
Oh, My HeartThen there's the beautiful Bulgarian melody, and Souliko, my personal favorite. Svetlana sounds like the nightengale of the poem on this song!Yes, this is a studio version of Russian songs, but I love it! I wish she'd record more."
