CD Reviews

Obscure but exciting country singer
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 04/30/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"During the late eighties and early nineties, there were a lot of new female country singers making their bid for stardom but very few actually succeeded. Some continue performing - details of their touring schedules and occasional record releases can be found on the net. Susi Beatty, an exciting singer with a slight bluesy edge, seems to have faded into complete obscurity. I can only trace one other recording by Susi - Down home jubilee, released as the B-side of Hard baby to rock, the single released from the album.Susi co-wrote three of the songs here but also recorded songs written by some of the best songwriters of the day. Two songs (Heart from a stone, It'll all work out) were co-written by Beth Neilsen Chapman, while Tom Shapiro, Chris Waters, Mark Collie and Kent Robbins are among the other great songwriters to have contributed.Susi shows throughout the album that she can sing all types of songs - ballads, up-tempo songs, happy songs, sad songs. It seems that her music didn't fit the requirements of country radio, otherwise a major label would surely have signed her up.If you enjoy your country rooted in tradition, updated a little and with a slight bluesy edge, you'll love this - if you can find it. TracksBe still my broken heart
Waiting for goodbye
Hard baby to rock
If this ain't love
Can't trust my heart
Nobody loves me like the blues
There's a phone on every corner
Heart from a stone
Rock-a-lot
It'll all work out"
