CD Reviews

Only complete Suk collection that I know of

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I am glad to see that this collection is still in print and available. For those who love Suk and his chamber music, this collection is a must-have. Suk's best-known chamber works are probably his two string quartets & the 4 pieces for violin & piano, and they are beautifully rendered on this collection. Most of the violin solos are performed by the composer's grandson, the great Josef Suk, and are as good as any performance available. A number of different ensembles are featured in this collection, with recordings dating from the late 1960's to the mid-1980's. This was not a pre-planned recording project, but rather a true collection of previously existing recordings. I seriously doubt that a significant number of these pieces are available anywhere else.Listening to these works makes one wish that Suk had devoted a little more time to composition. As it is, his body of work is relatively small. Suk is a lot like Enescu --- a tremendously talented musician, but one that had an awful lot of irons in the fire. His work as a soloist & chamber music performer (not to mention as a pedagogue) left him with not a lot of time to compose, and that is unfortunate. We should be grateful that he left us what he did, and that it is available on a relatively affordable collection."
