CD Reviews

Storyville: A band that should have been HUGE !!

"Storyville: Live at Antones is one of the best CDs/DVDs you could ever purchase. Actually, anything from Storyville is terrific but the shame of it all is they (to my knowledge) only made 3 other CDs. Together only a far too short time, this band ROCKS !! Two excellent guitarists (David Holt & David Grissom), a mind-blowing vocalist (Malford Milligan) and the rock-solid power of Double Trouble rhythm-section Tommy Shannon (bass) & Chris Layton (drums); sheer talent alone should have made this group big. Put that together with their songwriting and sound and....boy you just gotta wander. Live at Antones is a showcase for everything mentioned above. IT IS BRILLIANT !!! The DVD includes the wonderfully done Ray Charles/Percy Mayfield classic "Tell Me How Do You Feel" and Stoyville's KICK-ASS take on the Jimi Hendrix tour de force "Spanish Castle Magic". The CDs include "Spanish Castle Magic" and 2 studio tracks, one of which is a very different and interesting version of the CCR classic "Bad Moon Rising". The sound and picture on the DVD couldn't be better and the CDs are great at any volume, especially CRANKED !! My advice to anyone reading this review is: If you come across Live at Antones or any other Storyville release, GET IT !! You won't be sorry. Live at Antones, Bluest Eyes, Dog Years and A Piece of Your Soul are all hard to find. I guess this is just one part of the whole tragic case of bands with off-the-chart talents being rubbed out by clueless idiots with little or no musical prowess whose names are made by their actions away from the studios and stages. Sadly, the media eats that stuff up and newspapers and magazines are read....."
Storyville Ruled !

"Storyville were undoubtedly one of the greatest blues based rock bands of all time. Period. I discovered them by accident, or was it sheer providence? After a Joe Ely concert one night at a club in Houston, as I wandered back to my car, I was overtaken with the sounds of a shredding guitar in the next club and poked my head into see what/who could be playing so fabulously. Why, it was, David Grissom (unknown to me at the time). Then the band kicked in. It was the last number or two, so the door guy just let us enter for free. I was blown off the face of the earth. And the love affair never ended. Everytime I returned for a visit to Texas, I sought them out, and was lucky enough to see 2 more concerts. If you couldn't have been there, this reunion gig captured beautifully on 2 CD's and DVD, is worth every cent. The sound is pretty close to standing there right in front of the stage if you just tweak the volume a bit, and the visuals on the DVD are exactly duplicate the experience of a live Storyville gig; yeah, you had to be there, but this is the next best thing. If you've never heard of Storyville, buy this package, and if you are a Storyville fan, believe me, you don't want to live without it. All of the best songs from their various CD's are presented here and there are a few surprises, like a great rendition of CCR's Bad Moon Rising and a searing rendition of Jimi Hendrix' Spanish Castle Magic. The guitar exchanges between the two Davids, David Grissom and David Holt, will have every aspiring rockin' guitar player gasping for air. OUCH! And don't delay getting this one; it is no longer being manufactured by the label that put it out initially from what I understand. Long live Storyville!"
