Man, can this guy tug on the heart-strings

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Woodhams is actually Santa Cruz, Calif. singer-songwriter Steve Woodhams. And man, can this guy tug on the heart-strings! Woodhams delivers his Folk Pop in such a sweet, easygoing manner, it takes a listen or two before you realize that more often than not he's spewing heavy, alkali-laced lyrics. His acerbic outlook brings to mind writers such as Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann and even John Lennon. Accordingly, Woodhams employs a variety of pop styles to decorate his bile-centric songs. A collection of timeless folk and rock songs
a book lover | San Francisco, CA United States | 12/01/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"What could be more potentially exciting than discovering a man in the middle of his years with a collection of 16 timeless folk and rock songs perfectly executed? Steve Woodhams of Santa Cruz, CA is that discovery. Recalling the best songwriters of his generation, as well as those from before and after his time -- from John Lennon and Gene Clark to Paul Westerberg and Elliot Smith-- Woodhams keeps his sound homegrown by using organic instruments, from mandolin to gentle percussion and natural piano. His "I tried to love you but..." lyrics stand in simultaneous contrast and synch with his gentle (but not wimpy) musical treatments. Eastern percussion wends its way into the bitter pop song "Second Marriage"; "Just Another Mystery" has a muted, inside-out verse; and "The Fire(Might Get Burned)" points toward a partner's contrariness. For all of his bile and tunesmithing quotient, you could call Woodhams "the Aimee Mann of the Santa Cruz Mountains." -- Denise Sullivan, All Music Guide"

""Lost Dog" is a disc for the easy listener and the thinker. The lyrics found in these tracks INVITE you deep into the songs. The music speaks, and the words grab the listener. Woodhams clearly has an outstanding gift for lyric-writing as well as a fluent musicality which shines brilliantly through this collection of lilting, catchy, and compelling songs.Personal favorites are the first track, "Could Have Been an Angel", as well as "Second Marriage", "I'll be Your Sunday", and "At Your Door". Having said that, I can say that each of the tracks on the disc stay with you (in a positive way!) long after listening. This disc carries excellent variety, rendered with outstanding craftsmanship. Woodhams makes a particularly creative use of background vocals in "At Your Door". I must also mention the artistic and appropriate cover design. Well done! I commend to the listener this artful song-writing and compelling music. I want to hear more from Steve Woodhams."
