A strong debut

"About the time this CD came out, Michael Bourne featured Stephanie on his American Jazz Radio Festival and she sang many of the songs on this album. She had given up a career as a stock broker(!) to follow her muse. More recently, she's appeared on Riverwalk. It took me years to track this down, and I'm glad I did. The album is a nice mix of up- and down-tempo pieces, and she is equally at home with both-although I find her ballads absolutely smashing. You may not find a better take on "May I Come In" and "I'm in Love Again." On the other hand, "You Don't Know What Love Is" gets a surprise up-tempo turn, and "It Happened in Monterey" is just a lot of fun. Stephanie is nicely backed by a combo headed by the excellent pianist Hod O'Brien, with a guest appearance by Phil Woods, among others."
