CD Reviews

Now that's what I call Tejano.
Watujel | San Antonio, Texas | 05/23/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Someday, Tejano is going to come back, and Stampede will be in a great position because they've been doing the hard work of building a loyal following in a tough market. While many Tejano stars have miraculously "discovered their norteno roots" in the last few years, Stampede's music has remained true to the qualities that make Tex-Mex unique, while adding an original twist. Their upbeat, danceable sound features jazzy keyboard playing, assertive drumming, lyrics that are a cut above the simplistic status quo, and great three-part harmonies. Vocalist Alex de Leon wrote the catchy title track and several other outstanding songs; talent like that is hard to find. Nothing here is quite on par with their near-legendary hit from last year "Otra Vez," but it's still a very solid album with little filler. Stay together guys, don't let your egos get in the way and when Tejano shakes off its slump you will be reaping big rewards. Sony, shame on you for not providing sound samples to Amazon. Don't you want to help these guys sell their album?"
