Synopsis

Album Description
Dennis Gascoigne and Leo Hede (better known as Statler and Waldorf) first met Daniel Belle and Chanel Cole in late February 2005, a few days after the final Australian Idol concert. Originally intended to be a Statler and Waldorf album featuring vocals by Cole, the project quickly took on a distinct identity of it's own. Gascoigne's leftfield compositions and production meshed perfectly with Cole's intricate melodies and delicate lyrics while Belle's impeccable harmonic and string arrangements added a rich lushness to offset Hede's sharp electro beats. Spook make no apologies for their influences, referencing the early nineties Trip-Hop scene and throwing in everything from jazz/blues, folk, electro and classical choral motifs. The Spook sound is simply 'music that triggers some kind of response' and for that reason 'The Dusk Sessions' is one of the rare albums that appeals to all ages. It is at the same time accessible and emotionally sophisticated, Popular as opposed to pop.2005.

CD Reviews

Enchanting

"My favourite female singer, Chanel Cole, heads up this new band from Australia. This is essentially trip hop and I haven't heard a fantastic trip hop album in years. Chanel's sophisticated melodies are magical. You can spot their influences, but again I don't care. It is a superb piece of work. Totally enchanting from start to finish. My favourite songs are Faster, Cause & Effect and Predator."
A Good Try, But An Average Score

"This is a pretty average album I find. Most of the tunes are either, Great or those that you shouldn't really bother. Some of the music is really great to listen to and some that, you just think that the blurb from the top is just being to generous. Lets start off with the first song

1. This Album: You wouldn't really call this a song, more of an interlude or a little introduction to the cd. Despite this, I really think this "introduction" was really necessary, it's hard to listen to and even though this introduction takes like 1 minutes at 30 seconds, I really find this a real 'try-hard' alternative dance track.

2. Running Away: This song is great at the start, but when the vocalist, Cole gets to her high notes, I find I cringe most of the time. The music sounds like a ripped off track from Moby and changed slightly with just a different vocalist.

3. Predator: I don't know what to say with this one. I find it does have the 'mystic' touch, but then again I find it amusing how the lyrics go 'If You Insist, How Can I Resist?' Which it sounds like a tune that came from a wannabe rockstar. This track is laughable, but then it's one of the BETTER tracks from the album sadly....

4. Faster: Do you remember those shows with those footages with animals just eating each other. The music basically sounds like that, which is pretty amusing. The vocalist's voice sinks into the music until you just don't even know what she is saying. I find this a pretty lame track.

5. Trouble: Finally a track that is actually WORTH listening to. Trouble really captures the emotion of a girl, who sees that she is getting cheaten on by her partner. The only problem with this track is that if they just left it with a piano arrangement, it would have been SO much more better. But it wouldn't be "trip-hop" without the whole beats and the lame "dj" thing going on right?

6. Lullaby: Another GOOD track. I find this a very interesting track as I find it kind of weird that the quartet would do a cover of The Cure's Lullaby. The only problem I have with this track is that I just find it the vocals are just VERY annoying. When they stop for a full sentence, it just leaves you angry just saying "CAN'T YOU DO ANY BETTER" instead of going uhhh while starting to say the first word and stopping with uhhh.

7. Fall: This song is okay. But it's too much of an Evanescence 'try-hard' track. Cole's vocals are great in this one, but I find that this song has no 'originality' as it gets the whole 'Evanescence'[...] way of producing songs.

8. Cruelest of Deeds: This is just one whole boring track from start to finish. Who wants to listen to songs where the vocalists just mutters on about some [...]. I really hate this track and find it the worst one in the album.

9. Glorious: This is an good track. Cole's vocals really change me really. Her vocals are great and the musical arrangements are superb. The songs lyrics are gold. This is one of the tracks that you just make you feel better and this is a rare love song where the lyrics are great, the music is great and the vocals are great.

10. Cause And Effect: This song, is a mix of Predator and Lullaby. This song drags on a bit and this song really doesn't catch me really. It's just a nice to listen to kind of song. That is pretty much it really, it's just a nice song, nothing else.

I looked through Amazon and found that Chanel Cole was released an album. I am a fan of hers and wanted this album as this album was long awaited since she was a contestant from 2004. Once I bought the album, I was very excited. When I listened through it, I was severely disappointed as I knew Chanel Cole is capable of much more better quality music. This album is good for a first try, although only two songs really captivated me. I wouldn't say this was worth $29.95 (the price I bought it for). I would really only buy it when the price goes down to $25.00. But in the end, it just comes to opinion. If you are a fan of Chanel and you find that her style of music really inspires you and moves you, go for it. I'd encourage you to buy it as I am a fan of hers myself...

"Fantastic trip hop album! original and true bliss to the ears... chanel cole's vocals are really amazing...this is a cd to buy for an upcoming sensation in especially the trip hop and jazz genres. Her voice adapts to almost everything but excels in these two genres."
