Synopsis

Amazon.com
Youssou N'Dour and his band hit the end of 1999 (and the end of the century) with an unadorned set of mbalax straight from Dakar. N'Dour, without a major label behind him, can make some solid, hard pop music, and this collection proves it. There are no special guests, no Euro-pop ballads, no endless layers of useless overdubs, just a band that doesn't let up and a singer who is known for his soaring notes and stamina. N'Dour earns a continued hold on his reputation as one of Africa's best on this slim, thready group of songs, heavy on rhythm and groove, light on technology, and all around a return, if not to his heyday, at least to the roots he had before his crossover to pop icon. --Louis Gibson

CD Reviews

Special Fin D'Annee Plus
S.L. | New York | 12/30/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Great, hard-hitting (yet worldly) set from N'Dour & Le Super Etoile. Recorded at Xippi in Dakar, this CD is largely a collection of reworked classics, either expanded upon or stripped back down to their hard-core mbalax roots. Birima, Miss, and the opener Del Teew (a rerecorded version of No More from Eyes Open) all rock, percussion and crazy Wolof accents up front. Two bonus tracks, as well--one old Etoile De Daker fav and one from The Guide. The "short version:" If you're into Youssou at all, you need this recording!"
One of the best of Youssou's albums

"This album contains 8 songs and is 47 minutes long. The recording is fantastic and Youssou's voice is very clear and beautiful. The drums are very alive compared to THE GUIDE and is not overshadowed by synthesizers. Also in this album Youssou sings mainly in his native tongue, Wolof. All of the songs inside are fantastic dance music!"
I love this album!!!

"I always had in my mind that there is no such great singer than Youssou. This album makes me say that i was not wrong. Special Fin D'annee Plus is one of his best work. Each song has its particularity. My favorite song is Birima. Sometimes i think that it's unbelievable to imagine that he can have this beautiful voice. There is no word for me to describe his voice. I ask everybody to listen to this album and you will love it!!!"
