SPARROW & JOANIE PALLATTO S-SSD 0098 Sparrow is one of Chicago?s originals, he does not follow the fashion of the day, but his own north star."-Studs Terkel, Chicago The year 2003 presents both social and musical challenges to the modern artist and world citizen. Southport label founders Sparrow and Joanie Pallatto present CANNED BEER, in essence a musical journey and parody of both sound and culture. With all the profound advances in the technology of creation, musical modes seem more isolated, and on pause. The pop camp. The jazz camp. The world camp. CANNED BEER is the translator of forms and cultures. In the tradition of Frank Zappa, Weird Al Yankovic, Bela Bartok and 50 Cent, Beer is sound. Tracked at Sparrow Sound Design with the most recent digital and analog-based systems, BEER opens with "Recess." Pallatto sings, "I want to get away," an escape from the day to day realities, pop inside-out. Track 3, "Not My Kind Of Love" falls from the classic pop song forms of Marvin Gaye... "What kind of faith can take away a life?" The songs ask questions about religion, children and politics, featuring a vocal duet with Pallatto and Keithen Carter. Check out guitar master George Freeman (74 years young) on Track 6, "Eat White Castle" and his big brother tenor master Von Freeman on Track 10, the Was Not Was-influenced "Judy Called." "The Machine Band" with John E. Magnan (bass) and Alejo Poveda (drums), join Pallatto/Sparrow on tracks. Humor is the key to parody, and Canned Beer wants you to laugh, or as Sparrow sings, "I want to go down to the beach and get me a Canned Beer." Program Directors, don?t look over your shoulder and play what the other person plays, look in the mirror and play what you like. Southport Records is an association of independent artists that exist despite the complete control of our "air free" and media systems. Founded in 1977 it enters its second 25 years. And after all of these years we appreciate the support of all that care and listen.
