CD Reviews

Sweet, soulful songs of love and loss
Jean E. Pouliot | Newburyport, MA United States | 07/03/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"By definition, mine anyway, any CD that one can listen to over and over automatically rates 5 stars. "Roadwork," by bluegrass band Southern Rail certainly qualifies. It combines some fine bluegrass pickin' with a soulful, spiritual message that makes this band worth repeat listenings. My personal favorites include "Life's Railway to Heaven," comparing life to a railway journey that ends at the heavenly depot and "Sweetest Mountain Memory" which tells a tale of lovers separated by civil war. Even the heart of this stalwart Yankee is moved. If lead singer Jim Muller's melancholy bass voice doesn't make your soul ache, there may be little hope left!

In case I gave the impression that this is an album of downers, let me note that the album also includes some heelkickin' numbers (like "Run, Possum, Run!" and "Daybreak in Dixie") that will light up your heart with joy.

Well recommended."
