CD Reviews

Welcome back!!!
Bergman Jonas | Sweden | 07/25/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Lee McBee, former harp player and vocalist for Mike Morgan & The Crawl, is back with his 2nd solo album, since "44" a few years ago. The debut CD was a gritty harp-guitar outing using backup such as Kid Ramos and Anson Funderburgh. This time around the sounds are more varied with soul, r&b and country blues in addition to Lee's trademark Texas shuffle's. What a marvellous collection of traditional blues in a contemporary setting. Jon Moeller's guitar is excellent throughout, exploding on the starting track shuffle "Ride with me"! The addition of horns on some songs is used in an exemplary way, just the right punctuations on songs like "Soul Deep" and the 50's rocker "The Walk". Lee fares better on his own than in the band setting with Mike Morgan and this CD should bring many more new fans. The harmonica playing is more in the background, but when he plays - he moves the house like on "I don't understand"! The recording in all is lesson in how this kind of blues should sound-direct and open sound with just the right punch. Lee's vocals, as always, with that growl and hoarseness that is the perfect foil for this music - buy this one with my guarantee!"

"Lee has two solo albums out, I find them both to be superb. After leaving Mike Morgan & The Crawl, I didn't think he would do this well, what a great surprise. I like both of them about the same, nice gritty vocals and classic Mcbee harp. His song writing skills are still very sharp, these are a bunch of great tunes. He also has a fantastic band behind him, both of these are very much worth picking up."

"This Cd brings back the great Lee Mcbee doing things his way... quite frankly his way cant be beaten. His cover of soul deep is just a great song done in a soulful way , his vocals add so much to this already classic song. We also get a real treat with some original stuff...Woman down in Arkansas starts out with some great harp and just gets better as you listen. This Cd is soooo Good!"
