Synopsis

Album Description
The Sons Of The Pioneers brightened the lives of radio listeners during the depression years, their name and ethos conjuring up the spirit of the old American West and they endured as a much-loved group for many years to come. Songs such as "Tumbling Tumbleweed" became Western standards and made this group's name synonymous with the country music of this era. This lavishly presented 4CD set presents the cream of their studio recordings from the '30s then picks up the story again after the end of WWII when the group's notoriety took them to performances at Carniege Hall and TV appearances with the likes of Perry Como. Also included in the package is a comprehensive booklet with liner notes telling the band's story, a discography and rare photographs. One of the first of our Properbox sets to be issued with brand new packaging - a slimline box but with the same high quality music, liner notes and photographs that have made this series such a success.

CD Reviews

Bargain-priced bonanza
Eugene August | Dayton, OH | 08/03/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"For anyone who loves western music, the Sons of the Pioneers are essential listening, and this collection of 4 CD's provides 100 beautifully reproduced studio recordings from the 1930s through the 1950s. There are earlier and later versions of "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," and "Chant of the Wanderer," plus such gems as "Hills of Old Wyoming," "Timber Trail," "Out California Way," "The Last Roundup," "River of No Return," and "Montana." My only complaints are that the enclosed 50-page booklet is riddled with errors and omissions and that the selections include some dross and omit such classics as "Wagon Wheels," "Love Song of the Waterfall," and "Along the Navajo Trail.""
Good box set

"Just great tunes. The only problem is that they are all not there. This set is missing some great songs from the Memories from the lucky U ranch album. Instead there are multiple renditions of the same songs but 90% of this set's content is free of repeats. Great value for good recording quality of some great music."
