Theaterland Music: The Fourth Million Seller for Mantovani
Thomas E. DeJulio | Bronxville, NY USA | 07/15/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Originally released in monaural sound in 1955, then re-recorded in stereo in 1958, Mantovani's fourth gold album, Song Hits from Theaterland, is featured here in this two-on-one CD along with 12 more broadway hits released in the early sixties. In addition to Mantovani's phenominally successful arrangements of "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Stranger in Paradise," this CD captures the warmth and emotion of music composed by broadway icons Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Frank Loesser and Frederick Lowe. With its lush string sound, wind instrument solos, and the use of a soprano sax, Mantovani's world famous orchestra captured the emotions and moods of theater music to the point where one never really misses the lyrics. The familiar melodic Mantovani sound takes on a slightly less symphonic tone in the later album entitled "Theme from Carnival and Other Great Broadway Hits", with some sensational saxophone solos on Loesser's "My Heart is So Full of You" and Styne/Comden/Green's "I Know About Love". The frisky version of Bernstein's "I Feel Pretty" is also quite delightful to hear over again. Mantovani's interpretations of the two dozen American show tunes presented here are as remarkable and memorable as the shows in which they were introduced, providing further evidence of the consummate musicianship of Mantovani, the grand master of light orchestral music who transformed popular songs and show tunes into beautifully orchestrated classics."
