If you're partial to alternative-lite pop fare, Skip Holiday is the band for you. This San Francisco-based outfit's music remains pretty much upbeat and angst-free and harks back to easier times with power-pop tunes like "Buck Fever (Had a Love)" and "Wake Up." Yet they still manage to sound current--check out "Sick" and "Primitive Reaction." This band is the coupling of former Heavy into Jeff frontman Chris Lehmann and the ex-drummer of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Adam Aaronson, which explains its pop sensibilities and penchant for hooks and melodic harmonies. In fact, the grooves and melodies can get somewhat contagious in places, most notably on the aforementioned "Buck Fever" and the first track, "Stand in Traffic." The band is obviously influenced by such early-'80s scions as 20/20 and the Plimsouls yet uses modern-day touches like '90s guitar distortion to keep the music from sounding like the group's trying to rehash the good old days. Putting their own spin on the tried and true seems to work well for Skip Holiday, and the overall vibe of the album is universally appealing. --Lesley Holdum
