CD Reviews

GREAT INTRO & BETTER THAN USA ALBUM
W. Budris | Rosedale, NY | 03/25/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Just discovering Sissel from her PBS concert rebroadcast, I decided to try some of her CD albums. Getting ALL GOOD THINGS by mail in the version advertised here, there were two differences...the photo cover & the actual tracks. Instead of the photo as provided here, the actual cover of the UK Version is the photo from IN SYMPHONY, with references to the Japan cover internally in the booklet. The tracks are a completely different remix to those presented on the first US CD called SISSEL. There are also a couple of different tracks on each (Shenandoah & Solitaire on SISSEL, vs. One Day & Where The Lost Ones Go on ALL GOOD THINGS), making it unique & a must have for collectors of everything. I like the USA album, but just adore the remixed versions of most of the tracks for the overseas market. This should have been the version used worldwide. Weightless, Carrier of A Secret (album & single version bonus track) and All Good Things totally shine, as does the duet with Espen Lind, Where The Lost Ones Go. When Sissel sings "I'll will be with you", she means it wholeheartedly. Sarah's Song shines on both albums, as is very special if someone is having a new baby. Excellent work and I am glad she is finally touring and presenting her gorgeous voice now in the States."
All Good Things

"This is a very nice album. I find however, that the orchestration takes away from her voice. She has such a wonderful range and I find that it is not produced in this particular album.

My favorite of the albums we own is, Sissel, My Heart. In this CD she uses all of her multitude of talents. That album I would rate as 5 stars."
Flowing and gentle

"I first heard the beautiful soft voice of Sissel while I was trying to write a short story in a retro coffee bar in Cephallonia. The music matched perfectly with the setting and immediately I called the waiter over to ask whether I was listening to a radio station or a CD. He showed me the album cover and instantly I became a fan of Sissel.

Sissel's full name is Sissel Kyrkjebo (the final 'o' is written with a slanted line through it and pronounced like the 'o' with umlaut in German or Swedish). She comes from Bergen, Norway and although she sings mainly in English, she sometimes sings in her native Norwegian as well as Latin and has even sung in Irish on one particular album.

This collection begins impressively with the haunting, dreamy song 'Weightless'. The moment I heard this I felt at peace - an experience that was at once both exciting yet soothing. Even though I also enjoyed all the other songs too, it was this first song that remained with me. The melody and Sessil's hushed, clear voice sounded somewhat reminiscent of a soft Celtic lullaby, yet with a more contemporary musical arrangement. Sometimes, perhaps the instrumentation is a little too modern and electronic and not as compatible with her voice as the orchestration of, let's say, Irish folk ballads would be.This I feel would enhance her sound as the quality of her voice and music is comparable with that of Enya. Perhaps an even greater similarity could be made between the lovely pure voice heard in the group Secret Garden (also from Norway!), in particular in their memorable song 'Nocturne' (the greatest piece ever to have won the Eurovision song contest - in 1995 - this album is alas unavailable yet the video clip can be seen on Youtube). However, despite positive comparisons, Sissel is unique and really has her own individual style.

I also appreciate her consistency. The other songs on the collection are also melodic and of the same quality. The melodies are simple yet so well constructed and, even after a first hearing they stay in your mind and soul long afterwards. This is music to relax, to reflect, to dream and to wander in your thoughts."
