CD Reviews

Silver Apples - 'Decatur' (Whirly Bird)
Mike Reed | USA | 01/27/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"'Decatur' is totally different from any other Silver Apples release. One track,JUST one track that clocks in at 42:10.All instrumental. Some decent oscillator sounds combined with nice drum work and coronal keyboard drone is to be experienced here.Line-up:Simeon-keyboards&oscillators,Xian Hawkins-keyboards and Michael Lerner-drums.Personally,I liked their 'Silver Apples/Contact' 2-lp's-on one disc and 'Beacon' efforts better.See my reviews of both."

"This album was a major departure for Silver Apples from anything else they've done. It is one song (if you want to call it that), 43 minutes + in length. A long drawn out series of sounds that I personally can find no connection with.I talked with Simeon (the founder of the group) at a concert, shortly after Decatur was released. By his own words "We kind of stuck our necks out on that one." I'll say. It is kind of relaxing in its own way, but I warn you, don't buy it if you're expecting music like Silver Apples/Contact or Beacon - this is completely different. Some people might call it "ambient". I call it a waste of their talent."
Different strokes for different folks.

"I'm a Silver Apples fan from way back, loved their early self titled and Contact LP's. The reviewer above here is correct to say that this "Dekatur" is a departure from their 'norm', and I can see why someone expecting something else may be dissappointed. And with all that said, it had the opposite effect on me, because I just love every minute of Decatur. Some days I think it's their best album(:

I don't know how it will strike you, but I'm going to give it 5 stars because I think it's in the top bracket of anything they've done. I personally love Decatur, some of the best oscillator sounds this side of Alpha Centauri!

You go Silver Apples!"
