Real low light dreams
09/18/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You can't go farther than the name of this album for a good description, it really is a collection of gorgeous and emotive `low light dream's. Whatever mood you are in going in listening to this album, Signer's sounds, at once organic and yet of the man-made cities around us, it will take you elsewhere. The kind of musicality one so rarely finds in modern music, especially the electronic. Exuding the kind of soul one never thought a man could make when removed from the sound by machines. But Signer does it... a great listen, again and again and again."
SAW III?

"Over the years I've grown to respect aphex twin and can say with a straight face that I think richard d. james is a truly talented artist. However, when I was initially familiarizing myself with aphex twin's work friends and fans alike sited Selected Ambient Works II as aphex twin's best. So I bought it . . . and I hated it. Eerie, repetitious and long ambient soundscapes with rhythmic patterns almost completely devoid of any type of beat. Only after exposure to some of aphex twin's better works (I Care Because You Do, Drukqs) I've finally grown to appreciate SAW II.By now you're probably scratching your head . Why am I writing about aphex twin you ask? Well, the first time I listened to signer's `low light dreams' an incredible sense of wonderment came over me. `low light dreams' is exactly what I was hoping SAW II would sound like, downtempo IDM if you will. There's enough clicks and cuts here to satisfy any IDM fan and enough subtle, soothing and unintrusive beats to satisfy any downtempo fan.`detached under buildings' is a goosebump inducing track for me, absolutely gorgeous. There's a very laidback beat, lots of fizzy clicks and then this dreamy guitar riff floats over the top but the guitar sample is manipulated to sound like a harp but not too much that you don't know it's a guitar. So cool. Also of noticeable interest are the dreamy beats of `dreaming about making music to dream to' and the eerily soothing vocals of `interior dub'. Some tracks sound as if they were pulled directly from SAW II, like the opener `light fails me' with its electronic static, the closing drone of `post obsession' or the eerie atmospherics of `our home'. `low light dreams' is a wonderful discovery and signer may actually give aphex twin and other ambient gurus a run for their money."

"Emphasizing textured noise and synth sounds, this album recalls many styles and bands like early Seefeel, Sound Track, Casino v. Japan, Autechre or other bands that lend themselves to easy name dropping. But in many ways, low light dreams is much more accessible than you'd expect--several tracks feel almost hummable before they slip back into washes of abstraction and white noise, and virtually all of these traacks retain the framework-if not necesarily the fine details--of traditional harmonies. Sometimes, I think of this album as a gestalt experiment, where pieces of the puzzle are presented for you to arrange into the ambience of your daily life. When I play this during my day job as a high-powered orthodontist, my patients go wild. Be forewarned. Be very forewarned."
