CD Reviews

Siege-drop dead.

"Siege were year-zero for so much music. Had Siege never existed then there'd no Infest or No Comment, no grindcore, no Neanderthal/Man Is The Bastard, no Crossed Out and Slap-A-Ham Records, no Citizen's Arrest, no Born Again$t, no Rorschach, no power-violence, no Deadguy, no Converge, no..

..you get the point. Siege are quite possibly the most important Boston hardcore band and released what i think is the best hardcore 7" single of all time in "drop dead". They came up in the scene that also gave us Negative F.X, The F.U's, The Freeze, Gang Green and J. Mascis and Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr's old group, Deep Wound. They took the influence of super-fast groups such as Bad Brains and Gang Green, Brit thrashers like Discharge and D.C's chaotic Void and created their own blistering style of hardcore. They were just harder, faster and more downright than any other hardcore band to come out in the 80's.

This cd collects their "drop dead" demo, which was pressed onto 7" wax, and their two songs from the Pushead released "cleanse the bacteria" compilation. The two comp tracks are excellent but it's the songs from the single which steal the show. The first 5 songs from the a side are the most intense hardcore i've ever heard while the b side is a cacophonous, bizarre slow dirge with screeching saxophone that sounds like Flipper meets the inside of my head during a hangover. Which, suprisingly, is a good thing."

"play it loud to the following kinds of people:
1. The kids who say they like "hardcore punk" bands like NOFX, Anti-flag, and MxPx
2. People who think hardcore is the samething as nu-metal, ala Slipknot, Korn, and the list of [bad] bands go on!
3. People who think they know the origin of grindcore. Napalm Death (people who like Napalm Death know Nik Bullen wrote a song titled "Siege of Power, dedicated to these guys)didn't start grind, Repulsion did. And Repulsion's biggest influence was a hardcore band called Siege. Great underrated band! Emerged from one of the greatest scenes in America, the 80's Boston hardcore scene. Check out Dropdead the album and also the band! Even more great hardcore punk!"

"This is by far one of the rawest, dirtiest, most insane hardcore records I've ever heard. I got it at first from a squatter in Georgia on tape for 3 bucks, and from then on my life was changed. I had to transfer it onto CD so I wouldn't kill the tape from overplaying it. If this is what hardcore was striving to sound like (as it should've been), then the majority of hardcore failed horribly after Siege. More bands should take influence from Siege, rather, more bands should realize how much of their sound comes from these guys. If you like Siege, you should also check out the band Infest from California."
