CD Reviews

The wonders of hypnofolkadelia

"As Angus Grant says on the opening track: this is dance music. The triple header of fiddle, banjo and mandolin allow for some serious melodic energy and its backed by amazing bass, guitar and drums (no bagpipes, sorry - but in all honesty they don't need them). I've seen the Shoogles in concert twice now and every time they make any other folk-rock outfits at the festival look like small potatoes (with the possible exception of La Bottine Souriante). If you can only get one of their albums, this is definitely the one - it captures the live sound."
Just try and sit still. I dare ya.

"I came upon this band more or less by accident, and it was one of the luckiest accidents of my life. After a lengthy introduction, The Pipe Tunes takes off like a missile. Dancing to it could easily burn off as many calories as an hour on a stairmaster! The second cut, The Radical Road, alternates between 5/4 and 9/8 with an occasional measure of 4/4 thrown in. Take Five? Dave Brubeck, take that! (No disrespect intended to Dave Brubeck. I think he's fabulous.) The last cut, The Tammienorrie, will have you dancing a jig even if you don't know how. The comments between songs will give you a laugh, too. On top of that, the band members are very appreciative of their fans and respond personally to emails. In fact, they recently updated the message board on the website, www.shoogle.com, so that they and their technicians can reply to questions. Check it out! And don't forget to read the tour diary. It's a riot!"
If I had a Grammy, I'd give it to them guys !

"Hi. here are few reasons why I love this group to death:
(1. the pipe tunes) extremely captivating. u stay in suspense waiting 4 that moment when u go jumping but *surprise* (u know what I mean). great jumpstart !
(2. The Radical Road) dizzying..if this song was a drug, it would surely get u high. Btw, this is AN EXCLUSIVE TRACK !!
(3. Two Fifty to Vigo) steady, warm, gives me an image of a lingering mirage
(4. Hopstoi) this song has a funky feel 2 it, I love the vocals addition
(5. Venus in Tweeds) a classic.. u know what I mean :) restless and feverish. cool vocals too !
(6. Waiting for Conrad) a bit different than the original record..Angus (i think) calls from a distant place in a forgotten memory.
(7. Good Drying) Action Packed ! shifts u through several states of mind which leave u breathless.. I like the pauses in the end
(8. Da Eye Wifey) bright, and genious..love it when that lazy, childlike and playful melody returns in the end.
(9. The Tammienorrie) my most fav. reel after reel.. I dare u sit still at this 1 !
last word: I've never been to a live Shooglenifty concert (not mention any concert at all) but this 1 make u feel like ur there..beautiful company, excellent music and gr8 mixing."
