CD Reviews

Great second album
Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 07/12/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Gotthard is always the first band that comes to mind when I think of Swiss melodic rock, but Shakra is another great band from that country's impressive AOR/melodic rock scene. The band has a style that draws influence from American bands like Bon Jovi, Journey, and Foreigner and combines that classic sound with elements of European melodic rock.

1999's Moving Force was the band's second release, and is a definite step forward from the band's already impressive self-titled debut album. It's a tight, polished, upbeat melodic rock album. Their sound still seems quite similar (too similar at times) to German melodic rockers Bonfire, but you can hear them start to carve out their own identity here. On songs like Faces and Time in particular you can hear some more modern elements that bring to mind Harem Scarem.

If you're an old school AOR/melodic rock fan, this album is a definite winner. Moving Force should appeal to anyone who enjoys bands like Gotthard, Bonfire, Fair Warning, Treat, and the rest of the European melodic rock scene.
