"Iowa rock is often first thought of as Truth and Janey country... fair enough. However, I've always rated Shadrack's Chameleon Iowa's preeminent contribution to rock music.
Appealing from first spin, Shadrack's incorporation of lead guitar and backing keyboards into the harder rocking compositions such as Long Road to Ole' Miss is near perfect while other tracks, like That's the Way It's Gotta Be, have a minimalist presentation.
Throughout the album, there's a slight rural, almost Southern, bent with noticeable sombre edge to each play. Finally, I ear the gritty, somewhat Sugar Cube Blues Band, vocals as complementary though I can understand some listeners might take a different view. Chameleon is an album I return to time and time again ... a Psych Tripper Top 50 spin !!
