Synopsis

Product Description
Josh Hodges is Sexton Blake. Or, Sexton Blake is Josh Hodges. He came out of nowhere in 2005 with the brilliant self-titled debut Sexton Blake. That album was a critical success, garnering Sexton Blake comparisons to Elliott Smith and Pinback, among others. Copper Press called it a fantastic debut from this young, inspired multi-instrumentalist, imploring readers to track it down any way you can. This new album takes Sexton Blakes singular sound into new territories. Josh has carefully chosen thirteen songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s and skillfully made them uniquely Sexton Blake. Josh spent countless hours listening to hundreds of songs, trying to come up with the perfect collection - songs that Josh thought Sexton Blake could breathe new life into. Some, like Bette Davis Eyes, Evil Woman, Hungry Heart, Young Turks and Daniel, are well-known classics. With others, like I Need Love, Girl You Know Its True, and Rush Rush, he takes songs from different genres and sounds and transforms them all into great works of indie pop, all in the Sexton Blake style.

CD Reviews

Sexton Blake gets it right with "Plays The Hits"
Steven Bonaccorso | SF, CA | 09/05/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A friend turned me on to "Plays the Hits," the new all covers record from Josh Hodges aka Sexton Blake. it is clear that Hodges has done his homework, choosing songs to cover that meld perfectly with his straightforward indie rock. Hodges' sound is a blended mixture of influences: well layered vocals ala Elliott Smith, guitar reminiscent of mid nineties Flaming Lips, keyboarding which confirms why The Rentals are great, and a fine combination of live and machine drumming. These songs are fun, light, and addictive. They may all sound similar, but this is quite a feat, considering the vast differences of the originals. If you want to sample, "Hungry Heart," "I Need Love," "The Logical Song," and "Rush Rush" are standouts."
