"You might never guess from my reviews, but I try to be careful with adjectives. What will do best for this occasion is to quote the Tzadik's promo team, because I find their words entirely accurate, plus they use their adjectives more playfully: "Capable of confounding you, delighting you, making you howl with laughter or scream with pain, Anthony Coleman's Sephardic Tinge project features his unique approach to the classic piano trio. This second collection of original compositions and quirky cover tunes adds a newly-developed virtuosic edge to Anthony's sick and twisted technique. (...)"I remember last year's concert of the Sephardic Tinge trio (featuring Ben Street on bass and Michael Sarin on drums) on the North Sea Jazz festival. Coleman included a little quiz in the concert when asking the audience (for a winning prize of this CD) about a musician he paid a tribute to in "He Would Turn In His Grave". "Thelonious Monk!", someone shouted. "Nah, he turns in his grave the moment I touch piano keys", replied Coleman. Jelly Roll Morton was the answer, but I think both Monk and Morton smile approvingly (somewhere in heaven) about Anthony Coleman and his playful virtuosity."
