CD Reviews

Sensational tops it!

"More incredible flows from Sensational, the Ornette Coleman of hip-hop! The inclusion of Japanese techno artist Kouhei as a collaborator is a great move, and the sound they achieve can't be beat. Want to clear a room of boors? Play this or Trout Mask Replica. Works every time."
WARNING: NOT AN EASY LISTEN

"This is the third Sensational CD I have purchased. I first bought "Get on My Page" based on his appearance on the Handsome Boy Modeling School album "So How's Your Girl?" as well as his appearance on Jungle Brothers "J-Beez Wit the Remedy" (not to mention I am a longtime fan of Ipecac Records). Get on My Page turned out to be the kind of album I could not get other people to appreciate, because his rap style sounds like he trying to rap bad on purpose to a broken drum machine. But I went ahead and purchased "Corner The Market" because I was still intrigued by him. Each album I purchased seemed to be better than the previous, and Sensational Meets Kouhei was no exception. I enjoy this album most of all. I have no familiarity with Kouhei, but I like what he brings out in Sensational, which is more of an even hand...not too much immature pussy talk, etc. but more of an avante guarde minimalism. More than on previous releases, here his voice is an instrument, equal to that of Kouhei, and as such they seem to paint with broad strokes. What I found most interesting of all is what I read on their record label's website, which is that this album was recorded in one day. For some artists I would not want that, but here it keeps everything nicely undercooked, reserving the last two tracks for overcooked remixing. Thankfully the remixers also approached their work with a very moderate hand as well. Though this CD may be no less antisocial than the first Sensational CD I purchased, I still think it's the best album I have heard by him."
