Ever wonder what happened to that hip-hop of old--dope beats and raw lyrics without the gimmicks? Self Scientific have the answer, and they're more than willing to share it on this debut album. L.A. natives DJ Khalil and Chace Infinite use a stunning blend of lyrical agility and powerful production to give the listener a musical treat that more than stands out from the current pack. Pattering snares and ethereal keyboards are the backdrop for "Anguish," a track that illuminates life's everyday struggles, and underground sensations Planet Asia and Krondon add their voices to the piano-laden "Three Kings." Multiple samples enhance the bass-heavy snares on "Duality," one of the album's greatest achievements: the cut eloquently examines the struggle to maintain a balance between the positive and negative elements of life. Self Scientific are the sound of hip-hop's future, and you can hear it before the rest of the world catches up. --Kenji Jasper

CD Reviews

WHAT HIP HOP IS SUPPOSED TO BE

"SELF SCIENTIFIC'S ALBUM "THE SELF SCIENCE" IS A GREAT HIP HOP CLASSIC. GIVES YOU KNOWLEDGE ON EVERY TRACK AND PROUDUCTION IS ILL WITHOUT WHACK LOOPS LIKE ROCCAFELLA RUFF RIDER CRAP. CHACE INFINITE KICKS ILL VERSES FROM HIS MENTAL AND MAKES SENSE WITH IT. DJ KHALIL PRODUCERS HIS OWN ALBUM AND DOES A GREAT JOB. THIS ALBUM IS HARD TO FIND IN A REGULAR RECORD SHOP YOU NEED TO FIND A STORE THAT CARRIES UNDERGROUND REAL HIPHOP OR ORDER IT FROM THE NET. SOME OF MY FAVORITE JOINTS ON THE ALBUM ARE "BEST PART", "THE LONG RUN", "THREE KINGS", "THE SELF SCIENCE", "LOVE ALLAH", "THE RETURN", BUT THE WHOLE ALBUM IS TIGHT. PICK THIS ALBUM UP IF YOU LIKE REAL HIP HOP WITH A MESSAGE FOR YOUR MENTAL. IF YOU ARE SIMPLE MINDED STICK WITH ROCCAFELLA RUFF RIDER AND CASH MONEY CRAP. THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. PEACE TO THE GODS AND EARTHS ONE LOVE"
Excellent in every respect

"There has been a big wane in the number of strong albums out lately. For ANYONE even remotely into hip hop, this is a DEFINITE must have purchase. It's really one of the tightest debut albums I've ever heard. It has something for everybody, and even friends of mine who don't like hip hop enjoy it as well. It's not THE last word in hip hop, and he's not expanding any hip hop boundaries, but I'd have to say that this album excels in every way. Not only is rhyme delivery done with enthusiasm and strength, the beats are all well-matched - VARIED beats that is. There are probably no more than 2 songs if any that you might dislike on this album. By today's standards, that's an album handed down by the gods! Furthermore, the rhymes ARE matched well with the beats. You can actually tell that they created these tracks with unique intentions in mind. Not just another freestyle that they pop on an instrumental that happens to sound good together. The content on the albums is edgy, but not overdone to diminish his street credibility in any way. Most of the songs not only sound different, but are different. Songs totally range in subject and delivery, while still maintaining a strong respectable street-intellectual image without looking like some wannabe mega-gangster or overly preachy "I learned my lesson" hood-rapper.I don't really know where else to go with this album than other to say that you won't be dissappointed with this album at any price. GET IT."
A glimmer of hope

"This album comes at a time when I thought hip hop had both feet in the grave. But leave it to Self Scientific to lead the way to the music's much needed resurrection. When DJ Khalil's refreshingly original beats get linked with Chace Infinite's deep and insightful lyrics (did I mention his delivery?), this album is nothing short of a return to the essence of hip hop. Definitely a must have for true heads."
