Addictive Candy-Coated Poison

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sean Tillmann has always presented listeners with an interesting duality. His high voice sweetly sings songs of despairing, prematurely burned-out loners who have either given up entirely or are just about to. While the music is spare and pretty, Sean's tales are often quietly disturbing. Hatred, failed relationships and copious cocktails usually quash modest hopes and dreams. This six-song EP is Sean's most accomplished album yet. Backed by Lucky Jeremy and Ben Webster, this sixteen minutes of moody pop packs a wallop. "Give Me a B-Side," Sean's best song since "Princess and the Pony," is an incredibly catchy ode to a loved one who has finally succumbed to a hideous disease. In "Tumor Party," a mounting drug habit is memorably shrugged off with a self-effacing quip about telling the world that "Sean Na Na has partied his way to a tumor."However, as is typical of Sean Na Na, the most memorable track is also the most hateful. "Your Daddy Looks Dead," the sinister blues-tinged album finale, paints a barren suburban landscape populated by spoiled girls and brutish jocks whom the song's narrator fantasizes about gunning down during a kegger. As morbid and unpleasant as I probably have made this album sound, I guarantee you'll hate to hear this one end!"
