CD Reviews

A departure for Sarah Fimm
Summer B. Frace | Austin, TX USA | 09/25/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Sarah Fimm's last couple of releases (White Birds and Nexus) were quite fabulous. In fact, I was really looking forward to this full-length coming hot on the heels (quite literally) of White Birds because that EP was so incredibly outstanding. But I have to say, I'm a little disappointed with Red Yellow Sun. This album just doesn't have that unique, otherworldly quality about it that I've come to expect from her music. There's nothing new here. The songs are good and solid and it's well produced and listenable, but there's nothing groundbreaking, like I've come to expect.

The main issue for me is some rather mundane guitar parts. There's a lot of it on this album and it just really doesn't add a whole lot to the songs as a whole. There's nothing really wrong with it, but the guitar work just isn't that distinctive. It may be more accessible, but it's just not as innovative as she usually is.

Despite what might sound like harsh criticism, there are bright spots on the album. After a few listens, the first track did grow on me. It's catchy and has some unique musical elements to it. "Guardian" has some very interesting harmonies and really spotlights Sarah's lovely voice. "Only the Sum Of" has some guitar work that actually is interesting. It's upbeat and fun. And finally the closing track moves forward into new territory again and takes us back into Sarah Fimm style and grace.

Overall, I'm a little disappointed, but there are still some gems here that make the album worth having for fans. Though I will say, if you're new to Sarah Fimm, try Nexus or White Birds. Those are my favorite of her releases."
