CD Reviews

Rare and wonderful
Erin Shepard | Conroe, Texas | 07/20/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Once you have heard Sara Grey's music you will never forget it. Grey has a certain quality of voice that compels you to give her your undivided attention. Her voice is both powerful and sweet with a distinctive and lovely texture. It is a voice well suited to Native American ballads and the songs of Ireland and Scotland.
One of the best things about her singing is that it radiates a great love for traditional music. She just seems to know what is right in the interpretation of a traditional song. She is a ballad singer of great strength with a fine understanding of the importance of understatement. Her singing is richly emotional and she is equally at home with a gentle lyric or a harsh account of life on the frontier.
This wonderful cd is a great window into a forgotten part of our musical past. It is a must for anyone who wishes to hear what music sounded like in long ago America."
They don?t make them like this anymore.

"I first heard Sara Grey many years back at a folk festival I literally found by accident while out for a fun drive with my family. What a discovery it was! I've bought several of her CDs since and each one is a treasure. Her music ranges from traditional American folk to the kind of Scottish and Irish music that came over with the immigrants to this country in the 1800's. This CD is a fantastic collection of old banjo tunes, rare folk songs, and humorous folk stories she learned from her father. Her music is simple and comforting, like listening to your grandmother sing you to sleep. This album is a piece of our history, preserved in its living form like a lost language with a single speaker. It is easily one of my favorites."
Great old time music

"This is just a fantastic collection of old time folk music. When you read the other reviewers who say 'there is nothing like this' they mean there is nothing like this. Grey has mined deep into the music of America to mine songs that used to ring out from the imigrant filled cities of the East Coast to the wagon camps of the far frontier. One of the things I really enjoyed is how Grey manages to sound like she belongs with the music. While my brain knows she is a woman living in the modern times as I do, she simply sounds like someone who lived 150 years ago singing songs on the front porch of a cabin in some deep uncharted wilderness. I think this CD is something anyone who loves folk music will enjoy."
