Get Your Muzak On!
Evan A Genest | Hsinchu Taiwan | 08/03/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is intentional shmaltz. A music-major with a keyboard recorded cover songs of 1993's Sub Pop hit parade. The result is similar to Devo E-Z Listening Vol I. The more familiar you are with the original songs (see titles, above) the harder you will laugh. The songs covered here as muzak instrumentals are the signature ditties from Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Tad, Pearl Jam, et al."
Elevator grunge.

"What I expected this to be was a girl with a guitar, giving us softer folk versions of our favorite songs. Had it been that I would have liked it alot more, but what we get here is vocal-free keyboard covers, some almost unrecognizable. Truly elevator music. It sounds like it was done in her living room, when in fact it actually says it was done in her dining room. Easy to believe. However, once I opened my mind I almost really liked it. It's a case of being so bad that it's good. Some tracks like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Even Flow" are easy to recognize. Others like "Hunger Strike" and "Rusty Cage" are hard to catch. The rest is decent, and there are two bonus tracks as well. I'd say this is worth it for the major fans of grunge or elevator music, or those few people that really love both."
