Synopsis

Santiago Jimenez Jr. is forging his own musical path. Son of Santiago "Flaco Jimenez Sr. and brother of Flaco, who has achieved wide recognition for his popular adaptations of conjunto styles, Santiago has returned to a starker group sound, employing only Juan Garcia's bajo sexto and Ruben Vale's electric bass in addition to Santiago's own accordion and vocals. These Corridos de la Frontera meet the classic traits of customary "corridos:" they're sad-tinged songs about loss and love. They amble along, for the most part, at an unhurried pace, sung initially by Santiago but virtually belted out by the trio when they're all on the microphone. The vocals tremble at their most heartfelt, relating tales of the borderland that resonate deeply in Santiago's accordion brushstrokes. This is music of the Tex-Mex border at its best and most poignant, danceable for the crowds who hear them and rootsy enough to garner wide appeal with alternative country and old time folk fans. --Andrew Bartlett
