CD Reviews

An outstanding choral collection from Tallinn
Larry VanDeSande | Mason, Michigan United States | 07/16/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This collection of choral masterpieces by Antonio Vivaldi deserves far wider fame and circulation than its gotten in its five years of existence. Recorded in 2002 in the Tallinn (Estonia) Methodist Church, this collection includes a number of Vivaldi masterpieces includes Beatus Vir RV 597, Canta in prato RV 636, Dixit Dominus RV 594, and one of my personal favorites, Dominae ad aduvandum me festina RV 593.

The performers are a group of Estonian singers you've never heard of -- headed by sopranos Kaia Urb and Vilve Hepner -- the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra directed by Tonu Kaljuste. I don't know the correct pronunciations of any of the principals' names but I can tell you this -- they sing great and completely understand Vivaldi's idiom. Their Latin is excellent, also.

This disk was the first one in about 30 years to effectively replace my favorite, Dominae ad adjuvandum me festina. The best performance of that music in the stereo era was on an old Philips CD led by Vittorio Negri that is still available in a multidisk collection. This version is an improvement over Negri's and is miles ahead of the overrated version by Robert King, where speeds are often so rapid they defeat musicality.

If you seek a wonderful collection of Vivaldi sacred choral music that will keep you involved from stat to finish, forget that you never heard of anyone on this disk and buy it immediately. It is one of the best collections of Vivaldi's work I have ever heard and I recommend it without hesitation."
