CD Reviews

Good album from grrreat legendary vocalist!

"Hey , i wanna state , the Beau Brummels, mid-60's harmony group, were one of my all-time favourite bands, they pre-dated even the Byrds in that 'jingly-jangly' sound!!And Mr. Sal Valentino , their lead vocalist, had a vocal sound totally way -out, and incredibly memorable("Wolf of Velvet Fortune"..who could forget THAT song..what a vocal!!!)Their classic albums "Triangle", & "Bradley's Barn" are still GRREEEAAT grreat to listen to , not least for Mr. Valentino's incredible vocals (& the late great Ron Elliott's lyrics!!)Together Valentino & Elliott captured a unique & beautiful sound!!Their re-formed 80's album , too, "Beau Brummels" was an absolute Classic album of quality songs(Down to the bottom, Gold Dust, Singing Cowboy e.t.c...highly recommended , now it's finally on c.d.!!!)However, this , late in his career SOLO album , by Sal himself , has it's moments , great , great arrangements & musicians tho' it has , i have to sadly say that Valentino's voice is now a pale, pale register of what it used to be!!I can hardly believe it's still his voice, even!!Ireally hate to say this, even , as i had hoped for a superb, tho' late in his career solo epic.Be that as it may, this is STILL a good album & no doubt many people will still love this , Sal's very 1st. SOLO album!"
Sal's Back! And With Roky's Old Drummer!

"Its amazing to hear Sal singing again and with the amazing Freddie Krc on drums, who also played with Roky Erickson in the Explosives back in the 80's! I think Freddie is America's Dave Mattacks, they sound so similar. What has Sal done to his voice though? He is weezing along like Dylan? Sal was never an Eric Burdon, so I was surprised to hear how raspy he has become. There are lots of good songs on this though and Sal's new vocal sound really works on most of them. If you are a Brummels fan, buy this!"
Worth the wait

"Sal Valentino was one of the best vocalists in the 1960's rock scene. Like many classic Italian-American singers, he could put a song to bed. It's ironic that he had to wait until a few years ago to put out his first solo LP. It was worth the wait. But one must be cautioned. The years have roughened up his voice. However, it is an instrument of great appeal. I'd rather hear him sing all of these tunes live with his current vocal sound than sit through the old hits. The songs are first-rate and so is the singing, playing. It's very heartening to see that he has followed this up with two more CDs. Here's hoping he keeps making new music."
