Sadao travels outside and beyond on 1974 session

(4 out of 5 stars)
"Japanese saxist Sadao travels beyond his Charlie Parker influences and the pop-jazz he usually plays on this adventurous outing with Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous, and Jack DeJohnette, recorded in 1974. Forsaking the alto on this session, he sticks to soprano sax or flute, and his sax playing here is often closer to late-period Coltrane than Bird. Not one for the smooth jazz playlist, this is Sadao's most harmonically-advanced jazz recording, and show's he's capable of more daring creativity than he usually chooses to display."
