"The album "Saavedra" by Maria Isabel Saavedra is a gem. People for whom I have played it but who don't know Spanish have had to buy it because it sounds so good with her very-easy-to-listen-to and expressive contralto voice and the similarly expressive and varied arrangements of Caribbean-style music. It gets even better when you understand the poetic lyrics that paint pictures and tell stories.
She has explained that the songs "are mine for me and no one else. They have my personal stamp." And, "I would like to break some myths ... I would like to show that women can write; we can feel attractive, we can think and say important things and [we can] change the course of a country." With this album, she has shown that she has what it takes to do this.
I don't know how the timing and the selecting of the Latin Grammys or of the Grammys works, but this new album deserves recognition as a best album and best songwriting beyond the Latin/Spanish market. Listen to the samples online. If you like how they sound, you won't be disappointed with the album."
