"You know, I love hearing Stu Phillips on the Grand Ole Opry singing gospel songs and even some honky tonk inspired numbers. But please don't look at this, the only Stu Phillips Cd available, and think that it is a career retrospective. Now don't take this as me slamming the musical integrity of these recordings. They all have a certain charm to them and are very classy. However, they are basically only guitar and vocals. In all they all give the air of canadian folk songs. There are no steel guitars, no honky tonk numbers, just Phillips warm baritone along with a strummed guitar. To summarize, these 1958 recordings for Rodeo Records are basically done in Canadian Folklore style, and are not any of Stu Phillips chart hits.Great booklet by Bear Family, featuring imput by Phillips himself. Although this is the first Bear Family booklet I have ever came across that didn't have detailed recording info. Unless you are a HUGE Stu Phillips fan, leave this alone, you will probably be disapointed. I'm sure one day, his RCA recordings from the 1960's will turn up."
