"Russ Barenberg is an intelligent instrumentalist and intuitive acoustic guitarist. Released in 1989, "Halloween Rehearsal" is entirely at home in the 21st Century by virtue of diverse styles including Latin, Calypso, Bluegrass, and Irish; a strong sense of melody and impeccable taste and tone. "Halloween Rehearsal" consolidates in a CD the work from two earlier tapes, and with nineteen tracks is an impressive block of creativity. The musical moods range from exhilarated to exotic to mellow and beyond; each song a story in notes. The same can be said for Barenberg's other solo release "Moving Pictures"; as well as his contributions to "Skip, Hop and Wobble" - the recording he did with Edgar Meyer, world class double bassist, and the incomparable resophonic guitarist, Jerry Douglas. Barenberg's music would be enjoyed by enthusiasts of acoustic instrumental music; and especially admired by those who are able to both hear and appreciate nuances and subtleties. Incidentally, Russ Barenberg was the primary guitarist for the extremely popular sound track of "The Civil War", Ken Burns' PBS documentary. "Halloween Rehearsal" is an excellent recording with a cast of top-drawer session men."
