CD Reviews

Splendid Orbison

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Disagreeing with the prior reviewer, I bought this CD mainly because of the reviews that extolled its virtues, and I found it to be supremely enjoyable. Not every song is a gem, because I don't think Roy was put on this Earth to sing "Sweet Caroline" or "Words," but he does what he can with the material. The arrangements are extremely tasteful and beautifully produced and engineered. Even the background vocals when used are subtle and effective and never get in the way of Roy's magnificent voice. Some of the piano is extraordinary the way it leaps from the speakers with such clarity. Most important, Roy's singing is breathtakingly beautiful, and for some of the songs you can just hit the repeat button and let it play over and over for an hour. And everybody's right about "Danny Boy" -- I've always disliked the song until I heard this version. It leaves one speechless. This is a gold CD, which basically means that the "1"s and "0"s being fed into your CD player are gold "1"s and "0"s, and that means absolutely nothing to your CD player. So don't buy it for the nifty color -- buy it for the nearly-50 minutes of enjoyment it brings. Liner notes are all about the songs themselves -- I would have preferred information about how and when Roy recorded them."

"The wonderful thing about this CD is to hear that beautiful voice singing songs we are not used to hearing from Roy Orbison. All the songs are great and my personal favorites are Scarlett Ribbons, The Three Bells and Danny Boy. Being Irish I have heard every Irish tenor since I was a little girl sing Danny Boy and none have moved me as much as Roy Orbison's rendition. I can't emphasize enough how enjoyable it is to listen to Roy Orbison sing these songs. It does not disappoint."

"I am a big RO fan. Have grown especially fond of his MGM works, some of which are on this CD. This is one of his best displays of his voice and his flexibility in delivery ranging from basic rock to balladeering. "Unchained Melody","Three Bells" and "Danny Boy" are unmatched by any singer. His biographer recognized this LP as excellent.I am pretty sure that Barbara has no control of the MGM songs so MGM, cut loose some more of these excellent buried songs."
