Synopsis

Album Description
2008 comprehensive collection of Roy's singles for RCA and AGP. The RCA tracks have been buried down the years , while all but one of the AGP tracks have never been available on CD. From Northern Soul to Southern Soul , Roy Hamilton's recording career over two decades encompassed various styles, and with the birth and growth of Soul music during the '60s, his two-year tenure at RCA included 'Crackin' Up Over You', which has been an anthem on the Northern scene for several years now, along with other favorites like 'Ain't It The Truth' and 'Tore Up Over You'. Roy's sessions with Chips Moman and Tommy Cogbill at AGP in Memphis yielded a handful of tracks which have been the 'Holy Grail' of Southern Soul fans since their original release in 1969. Shout.

CD Reviews

One of the All time greats !

"Roy Hamilton has had a loyal following here in England for many years , and this CD is going to make a lot of soul fans and people who admire great singing very ,very happy. My own knowledge of Roy has been (through the scarcity of his later recordings) mainly acquired listening to his Epic recordings and Im happy to say I was not disappointed when I eventually heard the RCA AND AGP SIDES on this cd. There are several show stopping tracks on this cd ,"Angelica" (a song I knew through the excellent Scott Walker version) is fantastic , Roy's vocals are so emotive on this ,it got the hair on the back of my neck standing up!."Cracking up " is a northern soul classic and Roy gives it everything as the band go ballistic behind him! WONDERFUL!

The two very rare Epic tracks "I get the blues " and "I let a song go out of my heart" are a welcome addition and are presented in awesome Hi-fidelity .

I reccomend this to any fan of good quality soul music ,to many of us Roy will always be the BOSS!"
A true pearl

"I listened to this CD expecting some 2nd rate Roy Hamilton that had grown dusty is a vault somewhere. To my surprise, I discovered a soulful side of the artist that I had not known before. He is a true pioneer of the art. There were times I thought I was listening to Jackie Wilson -- Roy has more warmth but less range. Even the orchestration was fresh. I almost want to keep this production to myself, but it is too good not to be shared."
A missed opportunity

"Cherry Red has a great opportunity here: to present Roy Hamilton's AGP and RCA singles on CD for the first time. Unfortunately, they took that too literally. Every song on this CD has been dubbed from vinyl 45's instead of master tapes. Surface noise, vinyl "whoosh", and shrill "s's" from styrene pressings are all present, as is a liberal dose of computer NR. A missed opportunity indeed."
