Synopsis

These dim relics preserve most of the surviving playing of a legendary musician. Arnold Rosé (born Rosenbaum) (1863-1946) knew Mahler, played the premieres of Schoenberg quartets, and was one of the most significant musicians in prewar Vienna. These recordings, mostly by his quartet, sound pretty dim (most are from 1927), but they show a vigorous performing style that holds up well. Rosé's daughter Alma, represented here by her only recording, died in the Holocaust; she was the subject of Arthur Miller's Playing for Time. This is an important historical set that presents some superb music- making in a bygone style. --Leslie Gerber
