CD Reviews

ONE OF THE MOST VERSATILE ARTISTS OF ALL TIME
John M. Pellegrino | Syracuse, NY | 10/03/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"To smashinz who wrote a review on this project - You obviously have never heard of Ronnie Milsap because he is clearly one of the greatest country cross-over musicians of all time. He has amassed nearly 60 top 40 country hits many of which crossed over to the top 40 pop and adult contemporary charts. This particular compilation obviously spotlights his very early recordings before most music fans ever heard of him. You can hear some of his influences as he combines a mix of classic country, blues, rock and roll and jazz. Granted the sound quality is not the best but these are very early recordings. If you would like to hear Ronnie Milsap after 1973 when he hit it big you should pick up a copy of Ronnie Milsap's 40 #1 hits on 2 CD's. You'll soon find out why Ronnie Milsap is clearly one of the finest musicians of the modern rock era. His music combines country with rock and roll, something most artists are unable to achieve. So before you rate his talent on one CD that was released well before his commercial success, you should at least purchase some of his greatest hits compilations. This CD may have been released recently but the recordings were obviously not recorded yesterday."
Low budget review

"This CD shows the mastery and potential of being a great piece of work, but with static and distortion, this takes away from being CD quality. The compositions are great."
Average compilation of Ronnie's early R&B recordings
Cory B. | Arizona | 11/23/2006
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is a pretty average selection of eleven early Milsap recordings from the 1960's before he became a country artist in the 70's. Although these particular songs are not among his best R&B recordings, this CD does contain both sides of Ronnie's very first single from 1963, "Total Disaster" and "It went to your Head". Both songs are solid R&B tunes that were only local hits around Atlanta Georgia where he was living at the time. Milsap fans should appreciate these two very rare and obscure recordings being available on CD for the first time! Ronnie was only 20 years old when these two songs were cut, and it is amazing to hear how totally different and bluesy his voice sounds here.

Ronnie's R&B material is pretty obscure and has rarely been issued on CD until recently. If you want to hear some of the best material from Milsap's R&B period, there are two fine CD's available on Amazon, "A Rose by any other Name" and the self-titled "Ronnie Milsap". Both of these contain some excellent recordings Ronnie made for Warner Brothers in the early 70's. Pass this one by and pick up those two collections instead.
