"Excellent sounds, excellent writing, and cool precise group interplay. If you don't know Ron Miles, my favorite trumpet player, his playing could be described as somewhat akin to Dave Douglas but without the tentative sounding phrasing and attack which to me detracts a little from a lot of Douglas excellent work. And Frisell really gets down and covers a HUGE range of guitar styles and sounds. Also featured: a different guitarist on 4 numbers, (Todd Ayers), and some beautiful bass clarinet (Mark Harris) on a couple. Competent bass and drums, (and piano on 1 tune), rounds out the band.Even though this CD was released 4 years before this review was written I highly recommend you buy while you can (used or otherwise). For me an essential part of my CD collection and one of the best jazz albums of the past decade - desert island material, kind of like Kind of Blue. Everything about this CD is 5 stars including the packaging."
