(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album consists mostly of the standards of Eduardo Arolas recorded in the least expected arrangement - dark post-modern tangos after the end of the world. The only analogy that Osvaldo Calo (of J.J. Mosalini's orquesta fame) on harpsichord may evoke is, perhaps, Cal Cobbs on Albert Ayler's Love Cry. Do not let the names of the standards mislead you if you are looking for something danceable, but if you are looking for new sonic experiences, this is an album for you. One of the most radical attempts of tango renovation, this album puts even Piazzolla into the context of his time. It is on this album to the greater extent than on any other Mederos demonstrates not only his fluency in his native language of nuevo tango, but also his awareness of Cecil Taylor and Pierre Boulez. This record definitely belongs to the top twenty recordings in history of tango (and I mean exactly that - with no more than five or seven other albums Amazon curently has to offer). It deserves five stars by all standards. A work of timeless beauty, it stands out even in Mederos' discography. In fact I would recommend listening it next to his project with N. Brizuela or his Gardel CD just to appreciate maestro's versatility."
