Winners of both the 1999 and 2000 W.C. Handy Blues Band of the Year awards, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers have been giving blues fans the real deal for more than two decades. While most of their contemporaries are attempting to liven up or modernize the blues with their recordings, Piazza and company do their best to retain the sweat of the roadhouse on record. The Mighty Flyers mine the terrain mapped out by Muddy Waters and Little Walter in the heyday of electric Chicago blues. Old school, to be sure, and completely refreshing for it, Beyond the Source proves that there is still life left in a form all but left for dead by the excesses of Eric Clapton and his ilk. Employing the services of the legendary Jim Dickinson for the production chores on a couple of tracks doesn't hurt, either; there is a funkiness to this recording rarely found on a contemporary blues release. Beyond the Source is surely a godsend for any fan of the classic Chicago blues sound. --Mike Johnson

Rod Piazza is one of the great blues harp players, carrying on the tradition of fiery harmonica players like Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Wells, Carey Bell, and George Smith, the last mentioned was Rod's mentor in the blues.

"I think Rod is tied with Kim Wilson for best blues harpist around. I really love both of them, but Kim seems to put out better albums, while Rod puts on better shows. This album seems like it was just thrown together. I love Rod's playing, and I own all his albums, but it doesn't seem like he ever really digs in on this one. Rick's instrumental is a killer though, and I must concede that I didn't like any of Rods past 3 albums at first. They all took about 6 months for me to warm up to them, so maybe in a while I'll think differently of this one. Rod sings through his harp mic on many cuts, and it's a little weird. Not sure if he's trying to cover up his voice or what. Anyways, the album is OK."
