Synopsis

Album Description
Winner of the coveted Parents' Choice Approved Award, June 2002! "A sumptuous collection." - Parenting Magazine, August 2002 --- Composed and arranged by Sir J.W. Elliott, "Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs" was first published in the 1870s in London and quickly became a fond part of childhood for millions of children for more than a century. Recital singer Robin Hendrix presents the first recording of this wonderful music just as Sir James conceived it. The songs contain lyrics from Mother Goose's nursery rhymes and from popular English children's poems. The CD cover is an eight-panel foldout containing some of the charming engravings created especially for this music by the famed Dalziel Brothers studio. This recording is a unique and delightful means of introducing good music to young children. At the time this music was composed, the nursery rhymes were already well known in England, but the new settings helped establish the collection as a national treasure. In addition to the nursery rhymes, the nursery songs give a charming glimpse of an idealized childhood at the height of the Victorian period. Some songs show the gentle humor of the time ("Three Children Sliding"), while others were used to convey morals ("Maggie's Pet", "Mother Tabbyskins"). The quality of compositions like "When the Snow is on the Ground" and "The Spider and the Fly" brings to mind composers like Schubert and Gilbert & Sullivan.

Perfect Intro To Good Music Via Classic Nursery Rhymes

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a wonderful CD, perfect for introducing children to good music and these classic nursery rhymes. The little ones will want to hear the rhymes sung over and over, and parents won't mind the repetition because of Robin Hendrix's beautiful, secure voice and pianist Michel Prezman's dramatic rendering of J. W. Elliot's Victorian scores. Ms. Hendrix addresses these 46 nursery songs with the proper high seriousness of their Victorian origins (1870). Her voice is so elegant and graceful, you visualize her as a loving fairy godmother sprinkling starshine on her charges. A lilting, confident, and reassuring good humor undergirds the songs whether Hendrix is treating of a slightly scary "Spider and the Fly," comic "Simple Simon," pompous kings and politicians, "Ding Dong Bell," "Sing a Song of Sixpence," the lovely "When the Snow is on the Ground" -- whatever the rhyme and Mr. Prezman's excellent interpretation of the music require.I'm putting my wallet to work. I already have three copies of this CD and today I'm buying three more. I'm betting that these CDs will keep the joy of these nursery songs alive for my grandchildren long after I have been packed away."
Beautiful and soothing

"As a teacher of very young children, I am always looking for music. Music children can work to and relax to. My children love Three Little Mice which we listen to while having snack. Robin has a beautiful voice!! the next Diva of Jersey City. The music is soothing!!"

"I was looking for a "classic" gimmick-free version of nursery rhymes and songs,
and I nearly passed this one by because of a few reviews. Luckily I downloded
a sampling of several of the songs sung by Robin Hendrix. They were exactly
what I wanted. I ordered the CD for my son and he loves it --- and the foldout
panel with the various pictures of Georgie Porgie and The Cat and The Fiddle,
really got his attention. I highly recommend listening to the songs before
buying the CD and that way, you'll know exactly what you're getting ...
simple music and text of the much-loved nursery rhymes and songs."
