Synopsis

Amazon.com
Who knows what makes a good musician like Roberto Aussel play such bad music as "At the Dawn of the Last Day" by one Francis Kleynjans, a French guitarist and prolific composer of guitar music? Fortunately, this ridiculously overwrought piece, describing in music the last thoughts of a man about to be executed, is placed first on the disc, enabling you to skip it and get right to the good stuff: mostly well-known pieces by Ponce, Tansman, Rodrigo, and Ginastera. Aussel's Rodrigo playing lacks flair, but he does well with all the other music, resulting in a recital of highly uneven value. -- Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

An important work...

"Who knows what makes a person say a work is bad? Perhaps lack of understanding? Maybe it was a lack of patience in understanding such a well thought out work. I could moan about the overplayed nature of other works in our body of guitar lit, but I'd rather just say that this CD is an example of a fine player performing substantial works. Know Dyens? You need to know the works of Kleynjans to appreciate the influence."
A fine and sensitive player

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Although not well known outside guitar circles, Roberto Aussel is a real musician's musician, specialising in the 20th century repertory, with outstanding interpretive ability and a very beautiful tonal range.

The pieces on the album are mostly very accessible to all (although it must be said that Ginastera's Sonata isn't for everybody).

Amazon's track listing is pretty skimpy, so here it is in full:

1-2) A l'aube du dernier jour [Kleynjans]

3-4) Sonatina meridional [Ponce]

5-9) Cavatina [Tansman]

10) En los trigales [Rodrigo]

11) Fandango [Rodrigo]

12-14) Sonata [Ginastera]

The total time is 54'26"."
