Synopsis

Product Description
Jazz cornetist Rob Mazurek consistently pushes beyond the expectations of his listeners, drawing together ideas out of sound, personalities out of space, and fusing color and light into the tones of his music. The debut record of this new quintet, featuring John Herndon on drums (Tortoise, the For Carnation), Matthew Lux on bass guitar (Isotope 217, Iron and Wine) Josh Abrams on acoustic bass (Town and Country, Black Earth Ensemble) and Jason Adasiewicz on vibes (Loose Assembly, Rolldown) pulls together an astounding array of personalities into a seamless and effervescent whole. Sound Is features 14 new Mazurek compositions.

CD Reviews

Rob Mazurek focuses more on the trumpet
Anthony Cooper | Louisville, KY United States | 08/06/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Rob Mazurek's main focus has been on the Chicago Underground (Due, Trio or Quartet) where he will play trumpet and also play a lot of synthesizer, sampler, or other instruments. For "Sound Is" he gathers Jason Adasiewicz on vibes (Mazurek's discs usually have vibes), John Herndon on drums, and Matthew Lux and Josh Abrams on bass. The bassists are credited with electric and acoustic bass respectively, but they don't stand out in the mix, and I don't think they both play on every song. The haunting CD opener, "As If An Angel Fell From The Sky" doesn't use trumpet at all, and Mazurek plays keyboard instead. The rest of the CD has a lot of trumpet. Mazurek has a recognizable style, which he deploys over vibes which sound at times spacy or haunting. The result is a lush, dreamy CD. It's good, too, though Mazurek should have resisted to urge to duet with his toddler daughter on "Nora Grace".
