Synopsis

Album Description
In medieval Europe, jongleurs (literally translated as jugglers) were multi-talented travelling entertainers. Performing as acrobats, dancers, mimes, storytellers and singers, they were also expected to play a number of musical instruments. While usually uneducated and often looked down upon by society, they could be found performing anywhere from the marketplace to the royal courts, playing a key role in the spread of stories, song and dance music from region to region. Much of the music on this recording would have been performed by jongleurs. In this case, the songs and dances have been arranged instrumentally for Recorders, Shawm, Hammered Dulcimer, Guitars, Oud, Hurdy Gurdy, Bass and Percussion.

CD Reviews

Fabulous!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I ordered this cd even without the usual nicety of Amazon's sound samples, because I had the sheet music to a number of pieces on this album and wanted to hear how someone else's interpretation sounded. This cd has never left my player since it arrived! The Saltarello is a slower version than I've heard, but the recording quality and the clarity of the playing overall makes this cd a joy to hear, and the selections are recognisable without being redundant to anyone who enjoys early music. I am now a fan of Mr. Searles and will be ordering more of his work. It would be nice if Amazon put some sound samples on some of his titles, as it really helps to know what you're getting first. I took a chance on this one and was very pleased. Ron Wagner provides the rhythms for this album. Some of you might recognise the name from his other endeavors, like the belly dance "Slow Rhythms' cd, and his playing is understated and very supportive of Searles. Curtis Berak plays hurdy gurdy with Tim Powell on acoustic bass. All in all, a harmonious fellowship of accomplished musicians and a very solid and well thought out instrumental cd. SCA people, Renn people; a must have!"
