Honoroff is a contemporary American composer who has written extensively for television, particularly NBC Sports and the Olympics. What we have here are very recent symphonies that certainly reflect the man's talent, but nowhere do they seem either facile or trivial as so much music for television can. Symphony 1, Shoah, draws on Honoroff's Jewish/Russian heritage, though for all that, the work seems as if its origins were from the American prairie states. It's quite charming. His Symphony 2, From Ashes Reborn, has the text of a poem by Steve Mason about Vietnam in the last movement. Exceptional music here. --Paul Cook
